Women performers

Kattaikkuttu has always been an all-male theatre form. Selected male actors specialized in acting female characters and this is still the regular practice. The first performance of an all-night Kattaikkuttu play by a group of women performers took place in 1996. The actresses were trained by P. Rajagopal. They had a background in the rural Natakam or Drama genre.

The Kattaikkuttu Gurukulam has trained the theatre's first professional female performers. They now perform regularly with the mixed-gender Kattaikkuttu Young Professionals Company and with the All Girls Company.
