The disappearance of Kattaikkuttu, or its appropriation by others from outside the local rural community, would lead to an impoverishment of the countryside-not only artistically but also economically. It would cut off young rural people with an artistic inclination from a career as a Kattaikkuttu performer and result in the loss of employment in an already restricted local labour market.
The Kattaikkuttu Sangam was established in 1990 by a group of 17 professional Kattaikkuttu performers, under the leadership of P. Rajagopal, in response to the challenges posed to their profession. This association defends and advocates the interests of professional Kattaikkuttu performers.
