The Kuttu Kalai Kudam or the Centre for Performing Arts wants to create a space for Kattaikkuttu, its exponents and its rural audiences, where the specific qualities and dignity of this rural theatre tradition can be maintained, strengthened, transmitted and enjoyed and where new experiments can be carried out within a protected environment. In addition, the Centre would like to be a place where different art forms and people can meet and work together.
As a first step the association acquired 3.5 acres of land in Punjarasantankal Village about 8 kilometers outside Kanchipuram town in Tamil Nadu, South India. P. Rajagopal and Hanne M. de Bruin donated another 3.5 acres of land to the Sangam. Subsequently, a design was drawn up by Mr. Himanshu Burte, a Mumbai-based architect, for a centre that can accommodate, ultimately, an open-air theatre, a large, covered rehearsal space, two green rooms, the Sangam's office, 3 class rooms for the Youth Theatre School, an arts documentation centre, a large kitchen and two guest rooms. It is hoped that modest staff quarters and additional rooms for volunteers and resident artists, a gallery surrounding the open-air theatre and a playground for children, can be added to this first phase of the Centre.
The actual construction began in 2004 and was carried out by M/s Popular Foundations Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, under the supervision of M/s Modarchs Consultants Chennai Pvt. Ltd.
The Sangam plans to develop modest facilities to accommodate paying guests, in addition to running a small restaurant. The restaurant will cater to spectators visiting performances and to the young and adult visitors of a playground for children from neighbouring villages and Kanchipuram. The Sangam would like to explore the possibilities for an efficient exploitation of the Performing Arts Centre. For instance, we would be interested in receiving proposals for having some of the older students of the Kattaikkuttu Youth Theatre School trained in the basics of housekeeping and hotel management so that they can run the Centre professionally. We are also interested in proposals for workshops.
