Organic farm

As part of our experimental farming journey we hope to discover and restore indigenous and sustainable practices that fit the specific location and condition of our land. We have diversified our crops, produce our own compost and mulch from local organic materials and we are sourcing heritage/heirloom seeds, in addition to building our own modest seed bank.

When we acquired the land, it was dry and essentially empty. In the course of time, we planted a number of trees to create a living fence instead of a concrete compound. Work on the development of a fruit forest began in 2019. By that time we had shifted already to an organic way of growing vegetables and some cereals without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We make and use jeevamritham and panchakavyam, biostimulants composed of microorganisms that improve soil quality, instead of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

To these have now been added long-duration crops, such as turmeric, ginger, taro and rice (mapillai samba). The farm and our farming methods are still very much in an experimental stage. We are figuring out what works best on our land within the constraints of labor and the availability of non-hybrid vegetable seeds.

We look forward to sharing our slowly growing know-how of sustainable farming with you. You can join us in the everyday work. If you would like to grow your own organic produce, you can rent a plot and spend time farming at the Sangam with your family and friends.

The farming project, including the construction of an underground sump, a solar-driven water pump and water hose system, is supported by the Hamasil Foundation.
